Understanding Orbera™  — A NON-SURGICAL Weight Loss Procedure

The Orbera Non-Surgical Weight Management System is a 12-month weight loss program that utilizes a soft, saline-filled silicone balloon that is placed in the stomach for six months. The balloon is designed to partially fill your stomach, giving you a feeling of fullness. With that fullness, you should find it easier to make changes to your diet and lifestyle. Medical professionals will work with you during monthly visits to help you succeed in making those changes and keeping the weight off once the balloon is removed. Orbera offers an entirely unique option for those who want an effective tool to facilitate weight loss but do not want or qualify for bariatric surgical procedures.

After 20 years and more than 220,000 balloon placements in 85 countries worldwide, Orbera received FDA approval in the United States in August, 2015. Cooper Clinic Board Certified surgeon, Dr. Darryl Eckes, is one of the first 100 surgeons in the country to be trained in placing the Orbera balloon.

Who Qualifies for Orbera?

It is intended for adult patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40 who have attempted more conservative weight reduction alternatives. In the past, patients in this population have only been able to incorporate diet and exercise with pharmacotherapy or surgery. Now, patients have an entirely new option with Orbera.

An Endoscopic Procedure

When inflated, the Orbera balloon takes up space in your stomach which helps you eat smaller meals and become accustomed to portion control. It does not involve surgery, nor does it require long-term drug therapy. Placement and removal of the balloon is performed during a simple endoscopic procedure. The brief procedure is performed using a mild sedative. No incisions are required.

Once the thin and deflated Orbera balloon is placed into the stomach, it is filled with saline until it reaches the size that is appropriate for the amount of weight the patient needs to lose. At six months, the balloon is removed in the same way it was placed. Through a non-surgical endoscopic procedure performed under a mild sedative, it is deflated and then removed.

Weight Loss Expectations

Patients treated with Orbera™ can usually expect to have significant weight loss during the six months the balloon is in place.

Studies show that Orbera patients experience 3.1 times the weight loss within six months compared to dieting and exercise alone, with a very low percent of patients who stick to their behavioral modifications experiencing weight regain at month 12. The weight loss is rapid with the majority of weight loss typically occurring in the first three months of treatment.

The Orbera balloon is only intended to be used as a tool to help patients achieve greater weight loss. The amount of weight you lose and how long you maintain that weight loss will depend on how well you adopt lifestyle changes related to eating and exercise.
