An allergy is a sensitive condition acquired through
exposure to a particular substance. For example, the allergist is concerned
with the diagnosis and treatment of disease symptoms caused by exposure
of the skin or respiratory system to dust or pollen, or exposure of
the stomach or intestines to a particular food or drug. A physical
examination combined with allergen skin testing techniques can often
uncover the cause of most allergies. Once the specific allergy is identified
treatment may include a program to build patient immunity or medication
to control allergic reactions.
