A History of Growth and Service
In 1920, Cooper Clinic was founded on the sixth floor of First National Bank,
in downtown Fort Smith. Dr. St. Cloud Cooper, for whom the clinic was named,
and seven other physicians comprised the total staff. Patterned after the
Mayo Clinic, our multi-specialty physician group was formed to provide improved
patient care. That same purpose and corporate structure has continued
for 87 years.

Physician Benefits
St. Edward Mercy Medical Center - 1 Block from Main Clinic Campus
The majority of Cooper Clinic patients are admitted to St. Edward Mercy Medical
Center (SEMMC). Licensed for 343 beds, St. Edward Mercy (www.stedwardmercy.com) is
a not-for-profit general acute care hospital and member of the Sisters
of Mercy Health System.
SEMMC is a leader in the region for cardiac services, providing open-heart and bypass surgery, as well as a full continuum of cardiac diagnostic procedures. Other top service lines for the hospital include oncology, orthopedics, obstetrics/delivery, and pulmonary. St. Edward Mercy also offers outreach services through three rural Arkansas health facilities: North Logan Mercy Hospital located in Paris, AR (16 beds); Mercy Hospital/Turner Memorial located in Ozark, AR (25 beds), and Mercy Hospital of Scott County located in Waldron, AR (24 beds).
St. Edward Mercy has been recognized on numerous occasions for its commitment to excellence. Most recently, St. Edward Mercy achieved the Gold level as prescribed by the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC). This designation is given to hospitals that improve in one or more of AFMC’s quality improvement project areas: heart attack, heart failure, inpatient pneumonia or surgical infection prevention. For the past three years St. Edward Mercy has also received the AFMC Innovator Award. This award is given to healthcare organizations that share innovative and successful strategies in quality improvement and act as mentors to other facilities.
