VASECTOMY FAQs

Q.  My wife and I do not want more children. She wants me to have a vasectomy, but I'm nervous about having surgery on such a sensitive area.

A.  There is no need to be nervous. A vasectomy is only a minor surgical procedure performed in the doctor's office with local anesthesia. There is only minimal discomfort and a slight soreness for a few days. Through a tiny incision, the tubes that carry sperm are cut and clamped to prevent sperm from leaving the body. You will still ejaculate normally, but the fluid will not contain sperm.

A vasectomy is much simpler and less expensive than a female tubal ligation, and has a higher success rate. A vasectomy will not cause a decrease in sexual desire, and is an excellent alternative to the cost, health risks, and ineffectiveness of other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for men who do not wish to father more children.

I have 20 years of experience performing vasectomies with very good results. If you would like to know more about this procedure, call my office for an appointment. Fianna Hills Family Practice accepts most insurance plans and is in-network for Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Q:  When is the best time to schedule a vasectomy, and how long will I need to be off work?

A:  Vasectomy is an in-office procedure for permanent prevention of pregnancy. It is accomplished by interrupting the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the seminal vesicles where sperm is stored. You will need to be off work for 2 days after the procedure so most men prefer to have a vasectomy done on a Thursday or Friday. While you will be able to walk and function normally after vasectomy, you should avoid excessive activity such as hiking, lifting over 25 lb., horseback riding, etc. for 1 week. If your job involves heavy lifting or other strenuous activity, you may need to be on light duty or take off work for 1 week after the procedure.

I have 20 years experience performing vasectomies with excellent results. Prior to the procedure, I will discuss the vasectomy in detail and answer all your questions.
